HELP! Fix My A/C

Getting annual checkups for your A/C can save you a truckload of money in future repairs. I learned this the hard way, and it is not a pleasant lesson to learn. No, sir.

At the time, I was living in Jerusalem. My house had a single air conditioning unit, in the living room, and I liked it that way. It worked absolutely fine for years, and then it broke down one summer evening. I had no idea what could have caused it, but I called a technician nonetheless. And it ended up costing a lot to repair the damage. Now, ehre is the thing: a few weeks before that, a friend of mine had his A/C checked out by this company who works in the Jerusalem / Beit Shemesh area. He told me maybe I should ago get a checkup, and that he could hook me up with a good price. I told him that if it isn’t broken, I don’t want to fix it. Reasonable, right? Why should an air conditioning repairman come near my A/C, if no repairs are necessary? Made perfect sense to me, and I was happily going on with my so-called life.

Little did I know, that deep in the bowels of my unit, there was trouble a-brewin’. A few weeks after I told him I didn’t need to fix what isn’t broken, I needed to fix it because it was broken. I blamed my friend for jinxing my A/C, and he in turn blamed his mother. Well, there wasn’t much I could do about that, so I took the number of the guy who was by his place, and sure enough he showed up and checked out my unit.

Long story short – the A/C was fixed, but it cost me. And the guy told me that if I had called him when he was doing my friend’s maintenance checkup, there is a chance they would have caught it before it caused my unit to break down. Inverters are very sensitive, but this also depends on the comapny and model, of course. If you are in a serious home repair crisis check out Efes Takalot.

When the A/C goes, it really is annoying. Is it as bad as having the toilet, or shower, or washing machine go? No, it isn’t, but it is annoying nonetheless, especially in the summer. You know what I am talking about. You come home, feeling like a big drop of sweat, you push that button, and…. nothing happens. It can drive you nuts, because you know what is supposed to happen. And then, you probably go through a whole range of emotions and subtle pattern changes. Whatever, as long as its fixed. Jony Mitchell sang you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, and she was right. Jony never lied, man. She spoke the truth. It is true to paradise, and it is true to the air conditioner in my old apartment. It was a good air conditioner up until that point and after, but I am still kicking myself in the butt for not taking my friend up on his offer and getting things checked out. Needless to say, I do now. Once a year.
